If you don’t know who Robert Stokely is, he is a Gold Star father.  His son,SGT Mike Stokely, was killed in Iraq in 2005.  Robert has stayed involved with his son’s unit.  He recently sent a request to Soldiers’ Angels.  From the letter he sent:

Today, I had a request from the guys there when I stopped by the Armory.  They asked me if I knew how to get them a State Flag from each of the 50 States.  I told them give me some time to think on it and I’d get back to them.  They want to hang the flags in their Armory.  Their reason?  They said they serve America and they have a Georgia Flag, but felt they ought to have a flag for each of the other 49 States they represent when they deploy. I’d like to go another step and add the U.S. Territories if possible and Germany, since they have had wounded come through Landstuhl that MaryAnn took care of…..

Please share about this on the blogs.  The full letter is posted on the Soldiers’ Angels site athttp://soldiersangels.org/index.php?mact=News,cntnt01,detail,0&cntnt01articleid=667&cntnt01returnid=15.

Be sure to stress this:

To ensure no duplicates, if you can get a flag for 2/121 please contact Robert and let him know which state flag you can provide:  rrmwastokely@aol.com or  678-4161-387.

So far, I am aware of a Vermont and Virginia flag being sent.  He’s looking for the standard sizes: 2′ x 4′ or 3′ x 5′.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11, 2010 ?  A new American Forces Press Service Web special, “Focus on Family: Know Before You Go” is highlighting how military families prepare for and deal with deployments.

The special features a variety of stories, from single dads preparing to deploy to dual-military couples who will be deploying together. It also includes links to helpful information, including service-specific deployment resources.

The goal of the special is to help people “know before you go,” and we hope you find it useful.

We’d also love to hear from you. If you have some tips that have helped your family prepare for or handle a deployment, don’t hesitate to write in.

A recent article by Scott Fontaine from  FOB Tacoma gives an important insight into the soldiers of the of the STryker Brigade.  The deployment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division is the second of three Stryker brigade departures this year.

Staff Sgt. Justin Hill spent two tough tours in Iraq. The first deployment felt like a year serving in the Wild West. The insurgency was at a full boil when he returned two years later.

And as 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division prepares for its third Iraq tour, and the 26-year-old Fort Lewis soldier wants to find out if all the hard work, the time away from family and the buddies lost on the battlefield were worth it.

“Everything you do takes time, and I want to see all the hard work we put in pay off,” said Hill, a platoon sergeant from Texas. “The Iraqis want to take over their own situation. That’s cool. That’s understandable. We’ve come this far, but we need to help them get all the way there.”

The brigade of about 4,000 soldiers is heading back for its third Iraq tour and cased its colors during a departure ceremony Friday at Watkins Field. Hill, who has served with the same company since the first deployment, will serve as a platoon sergeant in Diyala province, an area in the country’s east where his brigade has history.
