” The soldiers who are placed in the Warrior Transition Battalion need six months or more of complex medical care. They come from different Army units, and some will remain in the Army after their time in the battalion, while others will eventually return to civilian life.”  The goal of this organizational day was to create a fun, morale boosting  event for the entire battalion of  warriors and their families.  Soldiers’ Angels was honored to donate all the prizes for this event and to help with the volunteering on the day.  If you didn’t help out this time, I highly recommend rolling up your sleeves and being a part of future events for the WTB.  They are an inspiring and  wonderful group of people to spend time with.

Soldiers’ Angels Luncheon with Jeff Bader and SFC Toby Nunn

On May 15th,  Soldiers’ Angels in Washington hosted a  luncheon to celebrate our Armed Forces with Community Leaders, Soldiers Angels in Washington, and those who we connect with in support , such as the Fisher Houses, Madigan Army Medical Center, and the Warrior Transition Brigade among others.   We were thrilled to welcome and introduce our special guests, Jeff Bader ( Co founder of Soldiers’ Angels, author of May No Soldier Go Unloved and SFC Toby Nunn author of  Northern Disclosure , filmmaker of the PBS #1 Documentary in 2008  Bad Voodoo’s Wars and youngest recipient of the Audie Murphy award .  Check out Toby Nunn’s Briefing Room to read a really nice blog entry about the luncheon.

I feel incredibly grateful to be a part of the Soldiers’ Angels Organization and even more so after meeting these two amazing people.  Without a doubt, Integrity coupled with a heartfelt commitment and passion of support for the Armed Services, Veterans and their families are at the core of the Soldiers’ Angels Organization.

We all love Patti for a reason. She has a heart of gold, is brimming with positivity and a genuine spirit of generosity and humanity.  She digs in and focuses on getting the job done and doesn’t get distracted by bumps in the road. They only serve to increase her determination.   Patti Patton Bader is a class act all the way and  it was so great to meet and get to know Jeff, her husband  and Toby. Two more class acts who are equally as wonderful.

Their positive energy was matched by every single person who attended the Luncheon, There were a few missing faces due to a huge traffic jam and time constraints, but for the most part, people battled through the traffic and took time out of their very busy days to attend.

It was a delight to have a chance to spend time with others in the community who share gratitude and a passion of support for our Military, Veterans and their families.  These are hard working, positive, dedicated people who live their lives with gratitude and commitment to honoring and supporting the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve to keep our world safe and free.

Thank  you to Mayor Linda Bird from the City of University Place , Deputy Mayor Penny Coffey and  Council Member Larry  Wilcox from the City of Dupont,  Amy Cruver executive Assistant for Representative Jim McCune 2nd District for attending.  I encourage everyone to  discover  these beautiful  Washington communities and work together to bring Support to our Armed Services, Veterans and their families.  These are all city officials that are motivated to do the same….so reach out and see what you can do together!

Also in attendance were  Jodi Land  and Nikki Wasierski from the Ft. Lewis Fisher House. The Fisher House is a home away from home for Military families needing to be near their hospitalized loved ones.  If you haven’t been involved with the Ft. lewis or VA Puget Sound Fisher House activities and support, I urge you to do so.  If you are interested, just email and ask about how you can be more involved as a volunteer.

Other Special guests included,  Julie Calohan from the  Madigan Army Medical Center’s Public Affairs Office , Lisa Palmer Soldiers Angel from Madigan, Danita Dahl and Spc John Dinkins from the Warrior Transition Brigade at Ft. Lewis and Kathy Horinek from the WTB FRG, husband WIlliam (just deployed) and Becky Craig from McChord.  These people continue to inspire as they work tirelessly to meet the needs of those they serve. It makes a difference when these professionals are welcoming, efficient and positive. I hope you all will sign up for support events in the future and will be able to meet these great people along with the Warriors and families.

As Jeff and Toby mentioned in their speeches, every single person attending the luncheon was a special guest. It is truly the 200,000+ volunteers of Soldiers’ Angels that make the wheels keep turning and it was definitely evident in the planning of this luncheon.  Soldiers’ Angels in Washington were honored to host this gathering and jumped on board with ideas, advice and help from the moment of conception to the day of the event.   We did have a few bumps in the road with a change of venue at the last minute and a huge traffic jam on the day, but I have to say Soldiers’ Angels,  are a positive and determined group of people!!  It always amazes me how awesome the Angel Network is!   Thank you to everyone who was on the ready when we were in the planning stages, especially Angel Lori who put a great deal of work into organizing food, and Wanda who did an enormous amount of work with hand delivering invitations to the Dignitaries and Commanders, printing the programs, helping find a new Venue and a million other things that came up along the way.  Also Melissa French who was in charge of making sure the Soldiers’ Angels Table was complete. Melissa did such a fantastic job.  Thank you so much!

Warren Nevins, one of the first Soldiers’ Angels was in attendance,  Ola Ward Retired Nurse from Madigan, Sue  Berry(Ft. Lewis) along with Angels Tineke , Rebecca , Cecilia,  Rani , Nancy , Andrea , Sammi and Jewell . I have to go through my list but hopefully I haven’t missed anyone!   It was so great to meet and chat with everyone! I Love it when angels get together! So many interesting conversations and connections were made. Very inspiring and enjoyable!  I’m still sorting out pictures and finding some good ones, but here is what i’ve found thus far.  If anyone else took some please send to soldiersangelswashington @ gmail.com   and I’ll add to the collection.

Phoenix Chili Cook Off

Phoenix Chili Cook Off

The Start of a Great Day!

The Start of a Great Day!

The Phoenix Chili Cook Off, held at Shoreline Park, North Ft. Lewis Washington on March 21st was a great success!

We (Soldiers’ Angels Julie, Sammi & Jewell ) arrived a few minutes after 6am to find the participants setting up and already starting to cook in the dark,  with the only light coming from Vehicle headlights.  Jewell got out to do a little recon mission to find our station and our Head Chef Wanda.  The ingredients, BBQ, cooking utensils and directions to get us started were all dropped off apparently before 5:30am but no Wanda! Panic went into full gear when Danita informed us Wanda had to fulfill  a previous commitment for the USO she was unable to get covered for and wouldn’t be arriving until later.  It’s pretty easy to be  in awe of Wanda Watonaga.  She is an amazing angel that does so much for our troops!

With the reality of Wanda being detained, we all of a sudden felt like Lucy and Ethel at the Chocolate Factory,

Firstly, we had never tasted chili let alone cooked it before!  Secondly we had no idea of how to even start the BBQ!!  We also had never camped and people out cooking in the freezing cold before the sun came up, seemed very much like camping!  Can you say out of your element????!!!

Jewell promptly voted Sammi as the sub Head Chef until Wanda arrived, because “clearly Sammi was the only one who could follow a recipe! ”  Jewell started decorating the station and I began opening a lot of CANS of BEANS!   The next thing to do was to ask our Competitors for help with the BBQ and  they graciously obliged…well..almost. Brent said. “Don’t help them! They’re our competition. They’ll probably win!”   Needless to say our BBQ was fired up in no time.  Thanks Guys!!  Despite the constant barrage of teasing coming from them throughout the day, they were great sports.

Wanda arrived shortly after 9am THANK GOODNESS, and that’s when things got spicy! Soldiers’ Angels Tracy Patterson showed up a little later to help and  Wanda’s family were also wonderful helpers in the taste test department! A great team! We made enough to feed an army….literally!

It was great to meet everyone at the Cook off, including the other teams who were Soldiers’ Angels Sponsored…Team Chuck (including Soldiers Angel Erin)and Hook em Horns Chili.  Danita of the WTB and those who were organizing the event obviously put a ton of time and work into making sure everything ran smoothly from beginning to end.  Everyone was positive, supportive and wonderful to spend the day with!    Congratulations to all the winners  and Chaplain’s Assistant John Dinkins for winning Judge’s Choice!  (Soldiers Angels Team Molten Lava won 2nd!)

Phoenix Chili Cook Off & Music Festival

Saturday, March 21, 2009

Shoreline Park, North Fort Lewis, WA

7 am to 3 pm

SOLDIER’S ANGELS HAS GENEROUSLY SPONSORED AN SA TEAM and ADOPTED 2 OTHERS.

This FREE event is designed to bring the community together in a fun and festive atmosphere while showcasing the talents of our soldiers, family members, staff, and community partners.

The event is a traditional chili cook off with contestants competing for $1000 in prizes.  Prizes will be given for the Best Chili Overall, Most Unique Chili, Spiciest Chili, and Best Showmanship.  All chili must be prepared on site; no exceptions.  Everyone attending the event will have a chance to vote for their favorite chili and crown the Best Showmanship Award as well as assist in crowning the Best Chili Overall.

WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP

Volunteers!  (for help with set up, clean up, face painting, and to cook
side dishes)
Groups/Individuals to “adopt” the chili cook off teams that might not have
money to spend on ingredients. (wounded warriors, etc.)
Anyone that wants to help with prizes!  We are looking for anything from
trophies to a check that we can give them.
CELEBRITY JUDGES
Soldiers’ Angels is thankful to have angel Wanda as our lead with this event. Here is  an exerpt from her letter to the community, challenging us all to become involved.

Valentine’s day weekend I found out that (The Warrior Transition Battalion) is hosting its first chili cook-off contest on March 21st & although they do not solicit support, I know that they need sponsors for the 20 teams (of 2-4).  So far, they have 4 sponsors.  The sponsorship consists of defraying the cost of the ingredients and needed items for the cook-off with $150.00 per team (each team has to make 2 gallons to feed the masses). Challenge your counterparts in other surrounding cities.  Healthy competition is a good thing for all!!!
I think they still need judges…hmmm…The competition is even open to civilians, so…I am hopeful that the community will step up in a big way & support these Heroes/Warriors who have risked their lives for the quality of life we enjoy.  This event is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) & other worthy organizations that support our military communities.

I HOPE AS MANY ANGELS AS POSSIBLE WILL GET BEHIND THE WTB AND HELP IN SOME WAY WITH THIS EVENT. EVEN IF IT IS TO SPREAD THE WORD>>IT ALL HELPS!

If you’d like to help  and would like further information on this event
EMAIL Julie at soldiersangelswashington@gmail.com  with CHILI in the subject line and I’ll send you the info and Wanda’s Contact information! I think this will be a wonderful event to be involved in. Hope to see you there!
