Today on the Oprah show, “First lady Michelle Obama, Tom Brokaw and Bob Woodward introduce us to some of the bravest families in America as they cope with the invisible wounds of war.” http://www.oprah.com/showinfo/The-Bravest-Families-in-America

Former South Dakota Army National Guardsman Sgt. Corey Briest (Ret.) and his wife, Jenny were among the guests. Briest, of Yankton, was seriously injured by a roadside bomb near Baghdad,Dec. 4, 2005, while serving with Battery C, 1st Battalion, 147th FieldArtillery, South Dakota Army National Guard, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. … Soldiers’ Angels have stood with Corey and Jenny since his injury.”

The message of the show was simple…..be grateful, never forget and DO something to show your support.

If you want to do something and are not sure what to do go to soldiersangels.org We have many teams you can join such as the wounded TLC team which helped show support to Jenny and Corey.

Do you live in Washington and would you like to help?? Email soldiersangelswashington @gmail.com  We need you!

Soldiers’ Angels is an all encompassing organization that is dedicated to supporting our Deployed, Wounded, Veterans and their families. As Tom Brokaw, Bob Woodward, Oprah and the First Lady said today…..it takes the communities to step up to make a difference.  “We owe them everything”…..therefore we all must do something.

I look forward to hearing from you!

  2. My Idea:

I watched the Oprah show and was inspired to contribute healing touch for injured soldiers in San Francisco. I recently graduated from a one year intensive in integrative medicine through California Pacific Medical Center (now Sutter Health). I spent the year donating 500 hours of hospital service providing healing touch for patients with medically complex conditions. I specialized in working with patients with traumatic head and spine injuries.

Even though I have extensive hands on training and experience in the field of massage therapy, with a focus on deep tissue and athletic performance massage for competitive athletes, it took me a full year to really master the skill of providing touch therapy and therapeutic presence for people with complex medical conditions.

I witnessed over and over how trained touch helps the body turn off the sympathetic (fight/flight)nervous system and turn on the parasympathetic (relaxation) nervous system, which is what the body needs to access its own powers of healing. Patients consistently reported decreased anxiety and less pain. I had one patient who had uncontrollable hiccups for two weeks and whose heart rate had not gone down below 108. Within 15 minutes of our session, the hiccups stopped and his heart rate dropped into the 90’s.

I imagine for wounded soldiers going through re-entry into society that healing touch, in addition to promoting the correct internal environment for healing to happen, is also a powerful way to elicit feelings of connection where there are feelings of deep isolation.

The highly specialized training i received and mastery of the skills gives me so much to offer that would benefit wounded soldiers. It would be a great honor to honor those who have served in this way.

The obstacle i have to providing this service is that there is not a program in place to administer this type of health care for wounded soldiers in San Francisco.

If you know of anyone I might connect with to help with developing the administrative/program side of this (either as a mentor or program developer) i would gladly offer my time and abilities to make this vision a reality. If this happens to get to the First lady Michelle Obama, I think she will greatly appreciate this idea and may even have some good leads for a mentor.

Thanks for having this site. Hopefully it can serve to connect complimentary talents and passion to make great things happen.

If there is any interest in this idea, please feel free to contact me to discuss in more detail.

    Sincerely,

  4. This show validates everything I think about and pray for each day. Our soldiers, military families, and warriors of all walks of life deserve the best support in every aspect of life. This show helps us remember, keeps us involved, and promotes daily interaction with those who serve our country. We all need to be aware of who they are, what they do, what they go through before, during, and after each journey of courage. Thank you Oprah for bringing it out…and thank you to those who serve our country. You are remembered each day.
